Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, and Bulgaria handled 1 608 053 TEU in H1 2020, including empty containers, excluding transhipment.
This review observes only full containers of the region – 1 172 737 TEU. Total decrease faced by these five countries in H1 2020 was 0,33%, compared to the same period last year.
The laden turnover decrease was in all countries of the Black Sea region, except Ukraine and Russia. In H1 2020 the highest growth was achieved by Ukraine – 5,85%, while the highest decrease of 8,83% was in Romania.
During this period, 56,37% of full containers handled were imported, while 43,63% of the volume was exported. It is estimated that laden container share was 72,93% and empty container share was 27,07%.
Export volumes from the aforementioned countries increased by 2,42% compared to H1 2019. The highest export volume growth was shown by Georgia – 23,55%. There was a growth of laden export volume in all countries of the region except Romania (-10,91%). In Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria it is stated 9,91%, 4,92% and 2,57% respectively. Imports to the region decreased by 2,36%, mainly because of Georgian, Bulgarian and Romanian import volume decrease of 11,62%, 7,21% and 6,52% respectively. There was an increase of laden import volume in Ukraine – 6,74%, while in Russia laden import volume decreased by 0,64%.
Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in H1 2020 distributed as follows: Ukraine – 34,20%, Russia (Black Sea) – 25,54%, Romania – 19,16%, Georgia – 12,69% and Bulgaria – 8,40%.
The top-five container terminals of the region in H1 2020 had a few changes in their positions by total volume handled: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, APMT Poti (Georgia) moved to the third place, while NUTEP (Novorossiysk) shifted up to second. CTO (Odessa, Ukraine) and BKP (Odessa, Ukraine) remained fourth and fifth respectively. All TOP-5 terminals of the Black Sea region except APMT Poti (Georgia) have achieved volume growth.
As for the leading carriers of the region, MAERSK still was a leader; while CMA CGM overcame ARKAS and ZIM and became fourth largest carrier of the region. TOP-5 carriers of the region were MAERSK, MSC, COSCO, CMA CGM and ZIM. In total, these carriers controlled 74,58% of this market.
