The situation in the Red Sea impacting Romanian importers and exporters – crisis or opportunity?

In order to mitigate the negative effects of the crisis in the Red Sea, companies carrying out import and export operations in Romania could take several strategic measures

1. Identifying and developing new trade partnerships and suppliers in regions not affected by the Red Sea crisis can help maintain continuity of supply or, in the case of export, selling products abroad.
2. Assessment and optimization of the supply chain to identify possible vulnerabilities and reduce dependence on specific sea routes or suppliers. Rail or even air transport can currently be considered viable alternatives to maritime transport, if your transport budget allows. If not, a diversification of supply routes (in the case of importers) by dividing the required cargo flow into several groupage parties allocated to several LCL forwarders, can be a successful solution to maintain a constant flow of goods.
3. Building up backup stocks for essential goods if the crisis persists or intensifies (which is quite likely at this point). This can provide a minimum reserve to deal with possible supply disruptions for importers.
4. Approach worldwide suppliers and trading partners to negotiate flexible clauses in contracts, allowing adjustments in case of major disruptions in supply chains or transport costs, which is where we are now.
5. Your company should at the same time assess the impact of the Red Sea crisis on transport costs and adjust prices accordingly, communicating transparently with customers about possible (hopefully temporary) increases.
6. Use technology for real-time monitoring of supply chains, efficient inventory management and rapid identification of alternatives in case of unwanted disruptions. Forwarders who can provide you with up-to-date details about your goods in real time. They are preferable at the time when you need to decide on the carrier that will make the next shipment.
7. Involve logistics and international trade experts to provide tailored advice and strategies to effectively manage the crisis and anticipate future changes in the business environment.
